Book Club: This is where I leave you

Considering that This is where I leave you by Jonathan Tropper (here) was turned into a movie featuring an incredible cast, my expectations were super high. As in many other books, it took some time to get into it and be able to recognize the characters… but once I did it was totally worth it! This book is hilarious… and I haven’t laughed (out loud!) with a book since Youth in Revolt. Sadly, I wanted to finish the book before watching the movie, so I still haven’t seen it!
The novel is about a family mourning their father and sitting shiva together… but it’s a comedy!!! Fashion references were used throughout the book in a funny way to either describe a character or a situation. For example, to show how one of the brothers attends the funeral it says that he was “…running across the wet lawn in his rumpled suit pants and motorcycle jacket like he’s finishing a marathons…He is wearing moccasins, of all things!” (p.36). The best part is that it seems that the movie followed the book as you can see him with his leather jacket in the trailer. But the most interesting character has to be the mom, who decided to wear dressy shoes for sitting shiva, wears very revealing shirts and has a very slinky wardrobe. “The old expression goes, a good speech is like a women’s skirt: short enough to hold your attention, long enough to cover the subject. Mom’s short denim skirt isn’t a speech, it’s more like a quick, dirty joke, the kind people are always e-mailing to you. And she’s wearing a tight black camisole with spaghetti straps.” (p. 234)
Have you seen the movie or read the book? ![]()
Next month’s book is Attachments by Rainbow Rowell (here)!

November 3, 2014 at 7:56 pm (2 months ago)I hate it when it’s hard to get into a book and follow characters – I find it hard it the names are all a bit odd.
There’s nothing better than laughing at a book though!
