Book club: Orange is the new black

Orange is the new black

When I decided to include Orange is the new black in Novelstyle’s book club, I was not sure if it would fit with the fashion theme the book club has but I did it because I really wanted to read it! To my surprise, this book might be the one with more fashion references! It’s incredible the amount of marks my pages have!

Naturally, I though fashion would no be mention at all… because everyone is wearing orange. But I was mistaken! As soon as in the first page, you can already find references that describe the character and it’s personality. Piper Kerman describes exactly what she wore in every single occasion, for example when she wore a “skirt suit from the 1950s that I had won on ebay, soft cream with a delicate blue windowpane check, very country club“.

Another thing, that was included in the Netflix tv show, is the canvas sneakers that marked Piper as “new” until she received the Uniform issue that included the heavy black work shoes. It’s also interesting that all the uniforms were for originally meant for man, and that they would try to fix them to make them fit better. There are many descriptions of the uniforms and the clothes worn by visitors and prison staff. As always, I want you to read the book so I won’t be mentioning everything! But  one of my favorite fashion references was when Piper received a letter that included Bill Cunningham’s ‘On the Street’ fashion column with pictures of several women wearing orange! (p.80) I absolutely loved this! Throughout the book, there are many fashion and brands references, but that’s not what makes this book a must read… it’s Piper Kerman’s writing and story. I was a little bit worried it would be boring cause I already watched the show. Well, it is not!

Have you read Orange is the new black?

Next month’s pick is Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell! :)

So glad you reviewed this. I was inspired to read the book after seeing the Netflix show (which is amazing, by the way). I really love the powerful social messages in this book as well. I think it says a lot about being a privileged member of society and how people treat less privileged people as well. Great way to review the fashion side of the book :)

Thanks Deborah! Yeah, I know what you mean… it also talked a lot about stereotypes! It’s a really great book and I think it actually complements the tv show. :)
