To be honest, I’m not really excited with this book. I think my expectations were to high… as a huge SNL and Parks and Recreation fan I though it would be an amazing book, like Bossypants by Tina Fey! That book was hilarious… the chapter about the cruise trip is still one of the funniest things I have ever read. But Yes Please was a little too weird for me. There were chapters that I loved, but after that there would be an impossible to finish one. I do recommend checking the SNL and Parks and Recreation’s related chapters. I wish the SNL one was a little bit longer as it was one of my favorites, but oh well! If you read it, please let me know what you think! :)

We’ve been in Indiana for almost 15 days… and to be honest I feel like both not much and a lot has happened! Until yesterday, we did not even have internet nor cable!!! So while my husband was at work, I would be in charge of cleaning and organizing all our stuff (4 luggages and 4 carry ons!). You can imagine my tasks were done in one second… so I had to go to reading, eating and napping :). Eventually a piece of furniture would arrive, and I would spend some hours building it. It is not like there is nothing to do here!!! Valparaiso is a beautiful city with a lot of stuff going on! It even has a bus for those who still do not know how to drive (me!), but the weather! Oh my! It is even colder than I expected! So I better stay in and enjoy the heater, lemon and the comfy sofa! One of my first purchases was a Keurig machine, so I have enough Swiss Miss and Tea!. Once my husband is back from work… it’s all about shopping and checking out stores! Our stuff will be here in February, so until then we need to make sure to have a few things to live! We also need a few extra furniture pieces… so we have been super entertained! Now I’m finally catching up with some of my favorite tv shows… and btw, fashion bloggers in the cover of Lucky?! How cool is that?!

Novelstyle moves to IN!

This year definitely started in a new way! On january 1st we moved all the way to Valparaiso, Indiana! I’m so in love with our new home… it is beautiful, and very empty!!! Our container full of furniture and clothes will arrive in around a month, in the meantime we are living with an airmattress and a few things from Target. Because of the weather and the shopping, I still couldn’t check downtown, but I could visit a few restaurants and stores, and I’m already obsessed! I love Valpo! Lemon (my pug puppy!) also came with us. She was allowed to fly with me on board and she behaved so well! Once we landed she was a little bit worried, but by now she is already at home :) You can see more pictures of this new adventure at Instagram #NovelstyleMovestoIN

After weeks considering whether I should post this or not, I decided that it was better to show that I do not love all the books I read.

I’m sooooo mad!!! I’m really super mad at Me before you!! This really long book was perfect…but the end ruined it. While reading Me before you I couldn’t stop thinking what a beautiful story it was… full of love and hope! It even fitted my book club perfectly, as it had a zillion fashion references. Lou, one of the main characters, has a very unique sense of style and is even encouraged throughout the book to study fashion design. And Will, the other character, is very fashionable and elegant. I wish I could mention some of my favorite references but I cannot go through this book again. It may have been an amazing book, as I still have strong emotions about it and it encouraged me to think a lot about many subjects. I honestly do not know what to think anymore… Have you read this book? What did you think about the ending? I really hope I’m not the only person with so many conflicted emotions!

Next month’s pick is Yes Please by Amy Poehler

A few weeks ago we made a day trip to Vienna for some yummy food and to try Press the Button, a photography studio in which you are the photographer! I know it sounds super random and weird, and I must admit that at first I was really concerned. This studio has three cameras: One on the front, the second one on the floor and the third one is attached the ceiling. When we arrived we got a brief explanation on how to use the cameras and got three remotes, one for each camera. Honestly, I was not really good at hiding the remote and that made my husband a little bit nervous. But this photo shoot made me realized that blogging would be way easier if I had a remote that allowed me to take my own pictures! Ok, going back to Press the Button! After taking a zillion pictures and even using most of the props they had available… they emailed the original versions of the images, and they also sent them with different photoshop effects! They turned out great! Can’t wait to frame a few and decorate our new home :)

Another month, another book! This time I picked Attachments by Rainbow Rowell (here). I know that lately I’ve been reading many books by her, my only excuse is that they are amazing and impossible to put down! What I liked the most about Attachments it’s that it takes place in 1999, at a newspaper office where internet is still something new and the Y2K scare. The fact that it was situated in 1999 makes the fashion way more funny, somehow ridiculous and totally unwearable. There are not many clothing descriptions but the few it has are very period descriptive. When in a club, girls would wear “the same Saturday-night costume- tank tops, candy-colored bra straps…”. It also mentions brands like Sears and Gap, pieces like “a very 1985 Levi’s jacket” and strawberry corduroy trousers (?!!!), and slogans like “Girls go nuts for Wrangler butts”. All these things made me think of what I used to wear and like back then. Glady, I was only 11 years old and those colorful clothes were definitely easier to justify on a teenager. I’m glad that I do not have pictures wearing what Beth had at the very end of the book, “A knee-length denim skirt, a rose-colored cardigan, periwinkle tights, and tall blue leather bookts. He looked like a sunset, he thought”. Well, I’m sure I would not have looked like a sunset on that ensemble.

The only Rainbow Rowell book I have left to read is Landline. Has anyone read it? Will try to get it this month and maybe make it January’s pick :) December’s pick is Me before you by Jojo Moyes (here).

This is where I leave you

Considering that This is where I leave you by Jonathan Tropper (here) was turned into a movie featuring an incredible cast, my expectations were super high. As in many other books, it took some time to get into it and be able to recognize the characters… but once I did it was totally worth it! This book is hilarious… and I haven’t laughed (out loud!) with a book since Youth in Revolt. Sadly, I wanted to finish the book before watching the movie, so I still haven’t seen it!

The novel is about a family mourning their father and sitting shiva together… but it’s a comedy!!! Fashion references were used throughout the book in a funny way to either describe a character or a situation. For example, to show how one of the brothers attends the funeral it says that he was “…running across the wet lawn in his rumpled suit pants and motorcycle jacket like he’s finishing a marathons…He is wearing moccasins, of all things!” (p.36). The best part is that it seems that the movie followed the book as you can see him with his leather jacket in the trailer. But the most interesting character has to be the mom, who decided to wear dressy shoes for sitting shiva, wears very revealing shirts and has a very slinky wardrobe. “The old expression goes, a good speech is like a women’s skirt: short enough to hold your attention, long enough to cover the subject. Mom’s short denim skirt isn’t a speech, it’s more like a quick, dirty joke, the kind people are always e-mailing to you. And she’s wearing a tight black camisole with spaghetti straps.” (p. 234)

Have you seen the movie or read the book? :)

Next month’s book is Attachments by Rainbow Rowell (here)!
